Lithuanian authorities propose liquidation of religious communities ‘threatening national security’

The deputies of the Seimas of Lithuania proposed to allow the court to liquidate a religious community if its functioning poses a threat to the security of the country, reports the national radio LRT.

It is known that if this proposal is accepted, then it will be possible to liquidate the religious community, “if it is necessary for reasons of security, protection of public order and protection of the rights of citizens.”

Also, Tomas Vytautas Raskevičius, a member of the Freedom Party in the ruling coalition and head of the parliamentary committee on human rights, said that “the move is a response to the pro-war views of some religious groups on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.”

Experts believe that we are talking about the Orthodox Vilna-Lithuanian diocese, which canonically belongs to the Moscow Patriarchate.

It is noteworthy that despite the fact that MP Rimante Šalašvičiute claimed that during the preparation of the amendments, the Orthodox community was not qualified as a threat to national security, the BNS news agency, reporting on the mentioned amendment, used the image of an Orthodox church as an illustration.
