Giving Ukrainian LGBT couples the right to enter into same-sex partnerships would be “an important step for Ukraine to be perceived as a Western democracy.” This was stated by the deputy of the Verkhovna Rada from the party “Voice”, the author of the bill on “registered partnerships” Inna Sovsun, writes politico.com.
The people’s deputy noted that there is no agreement in society on the issue of whether the Ukrainian model of democracy should provide for same-sex marriages.
“What we are fighting for is a matter of political debate,” Sovsun says. “There is a general consensus that we are fighting for a liberal democracy that respects human rights. But the devil is always in the details, right? Does this goal of liberal democracy include same-sex marriage or not?”
