U.S. senator calls it “shameful” that there is no clear position on the persecution of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church

US Senator James David Vance, a Republican from Ohio, has said that the US establishment has not noticed the impending disaster in Ukraine with the violation of democratic values, where the authorities plan to ban the largest religious denomination – the Ukrainian Orthodox Church – in the near future. About this he told in social network X.

“Perhaps some churches are closer to Russia, but you can not arrange a radical restriction of the religious community with its religious freedom, because several of its members do not agree with you about today’s conflict,” he said.

In addition, Senator Vance noted that the U.S. actually “slept through” the violation of basic democratic rights in the area of religious freedom. Vance called this situation a “disgrace.”

“Our shame for not seeing this coming. Our shame for inaction. Our shame for refusing to use the billions of dollars we send to Ukraine as a lever to ensure and guarantee religious freedom,” the Republican concluded.

Earlier, the head of the international human rights company Amsterdam & Partners LLP, Robert Amsterdam, who represents the legal interests of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, said that his team is preparing a voluminous document describing the facts of persecution of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. The document is planned to be submitted to the US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF).
