MP Poturaev criticized the U.S. Republican Party for trying to prevent the Verkhovna Rada from passing a law banning the UOC

The head of the committee for humanitarian and information policy, an MP of the pro-presidential party, Mykyta Poturaev, has criticized representatives of the US Republican Party for trying to prevent the Ukrainian parliament from adopting law No 8371 aimed at banning the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. He believes that the US misunderstands the concept of this law, because thanks to it Ukraine “fights against the Kremlin’s agents”, but not against the Church and its flock. About this he told in a commentary to the edition “Glavkom”.

“In the United States to this (the adoption of the law banning the UOC, – ed.) are quite skeptical of the Republicans, especially the extreme Trumpist wing. They still believe that we are fighting the church and its flock, not the Kremlin’s agents. We also have such people in our faction – the main argument of these deputies is that if there are claims against specific traitors and tipsters among the priests, then we should bring cases against them and deal with them, not with the church. So next time I will bring to the faction the blatantly anti-Ukrainian literature that was found in Lavra. Its possession does not fall under criminal law, but everything is obvious there. And to our American colleagues who believe that “everything is not so clear-cut”, I will show photographs of tortured religious figures of various denominations. Maybe then their opinion will change. At least, we will work on it”, – Poturaev said.

We would like to point out that earlier we reported that Nikita Poturaev told how the situation with the adoption in the second reading of the bill No 8371, aimed at banning the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, was progressing. The MP does not rule out that the anti-church law, although ready for voting, may not be brought to the plenary hall due to “competing legislative priorities”.
