American lawyer Robert Amsterdam, who has been representing the interests of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church as a lawyer since last fall, will leave for Kiev in the coming days. This is reported by the Politics of the country.

It is noted that he will come to Kiev “as a lawyer of the UOC to meet with representatives of the Holy Synod to discuss how we can challenge the bill to ban the UOC.”

Robert Amsterdam considers the bill “a completely shocking and wrong move by a government that in the 21st century wants to abandon legal principles in an attempt to sow discord among its citizens and thus divert their attention from its own mistakes and failures. I hope to meet with priests and their lawyers who are fighting false accusations and a smear campaign inspired by a government that wants to justify its discriminatory and illegal policy of religious persecution.”

The lawyer also intends to meet with Ukrainian authorities.

“As a friend of Ukraine, I am ready to meet with Mr. Yermak, the head of President Zelensky’s office, the head of the relevant government agency Mr. Yelensky or their representatives, if they so wish, to help them find a way to support Ukraine in accordance with its international human rights obligations”, – he said.

In addition, Amsterdam said that if the law is adopted, the UOC “will apply both domestic and international legal steps”.
