Results of the Holy Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of March 20, 2023

On March 20, 2023, a meeting of the Holy Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church was held at the Holy Dormition Kiev-Pechersk Lavra under the chairmanship of His Beatitude Metropolitan Onufry of Kyiv and All Ukraine. This was reported by the Information and Educational Department of the UOC.

Due to the inability to participate in the meetings of the Holy Synod, His Grace Metropolitan Lazar of Simferopol and Crimea was withdrawn from its permanent members.

After hearing the report of His Grace Bishop Gideon of Makarov, the Synod dismissed him for health reasons from the positions of vicar of the Kyiv Metropolis and vicar of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos of the Tithes Monastery in Kiev. In view of this, a new governor was appointed for this monastery.

In connection with numerous cases of discrimination against believers and communities of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and the situation around the Holy Dormition Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, the Synod adopted the text of an appeal to President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky. The Synod also addressed the faithful children of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and the people of Ukraine.

In addition, the Synod approved the abbess of the convent in honor of the icon of the Mother of God “Healer” of the Odessa diocese and the abbot of the monastery of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos “Horecha” in the city of Chernivtsi.

In response to the request of the rector of the Kyiv Theological Academy and Seminary, the texts of the service to Saint and Confessor Vasily (Bogdashevsky) and the akathist of the Cathedral of Saints of the Kyiv Theological Academy were approved for liturgical use.
