The Georgian Church condemned its cleric for participating in a political action

The Georgian Patriarchate called unacceptable the “unauthorized actions” of one of the priests, who the day before took part in the action of the “Conservative Movement” in the center of Tbilisi against Georgia’s integration into the EU and NATO. According to the authorities, the cleric violated church canons by his actions, writes Pravlife.

Shortly before the start of political protests, the Patriarchate called on the clergy to “refrain from taking radical positions in public.”

Nevertheless, one of the clerics, whose name is not known, ignored the relevant recommendation of the hierarchy and took part in the rally without permission. “Moreover, he acted in violation of church canons and contributed to the polarization of society with his calls,” the statement said.

Revealing the details of the incident, the Patriarchate noted that during the action, “along with prayers, there were threats against citizens, insulting appeals, obscene language” and aggressive actions on the part of the clergyman were noticed.

Calling such behavior unacceptable, the statement emphasized the need for calm and peace in the country, and also assured that the Church will always stand far from calls for violence and disengagement in society.

Reportedly, a letter was sent to the ruling bishop of the diocese in which the priest serves, demanding that he respond to the incident.
