The ancient Assumption Cathedral of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church is planned to be transferred to the ownership of the state

The Smelyansky district prosecutor’s office sent a statement to the court demanding to abolish the right of ownership of the UOC to the Assumption Cathedral, built in the 12th century by Prince Vsevolod Olgovich, and transfer it to state ownership. The application is posted on the website of the Cherkasy Regional Prosecutor’s Office.

This requirement of the prosecutor’s office is based on the materials of the regional Department of the SSU.

Law enforcers indicate that in 1965 the church was recognized as an archeological monument of republican significance. In 2009, the Cabinet of Ministers entered the Kanev Assumption Cathedral into the State Register of Immovable Monuments of Ukraine as an archeological monument of national importance.

Prosecutors say that contrary to the requirements of the law, as well as a direct ban on the stay of an archeological monument in the ownership of any form other than the state, in 2003 the Kanev City Council, without approval, granted permission to the UOC to register ownership.
