The rector of the Pochaev Theological Seminary of the UOC Iov (Smakouz) received a fine of UAH 8.5 thousand for inciting religious hatred. The clergyman received suspicion in this case in December last year. This is reported by the publication zaxid.net.
The verdict states that a linguistic examination found signs of inciting religious hatred in the publication on social networks. The hierarch of the UOC cooperated with the investigation, so he received a light punishment.
It is also reported that during the investigation, the bishop “signed an agreement with the prosecutor on the recognition of guilt. In it, the clergyman pleaded guilty and agreed to the punishment agreed by the parties.”
The hearing in this case took place on January 4. As stated in the verdict of the Kremenets District Court, Judge Natalya Shulgach approved the agreement and found Archbishop Iov (Smakous) guilty of violating Part 1 of Art. 161 of the Criminal Code (incitement of religious hatred), imposing a UAH 8.5 thousand fine on him. In addition, the clergyman must pay UAH 9,000 for the examinations.
The verdict has not yet entered into force, it can be appealed to the Court of Appeal.
