On October 20, a council of the Latvian Orthodox Church was held in the Riga Church of All Saints, in which both clergy and laity took part. There were two issues on the agenda – an appeal to Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia on granting the LOC the status of an autocephalous church and making appropriate changes to the charter of the LOC.
According to the new Law on the Latvian Orthodox Church, initiated by the President of Latvia, Egils Levits, and approved by the Saeima, these amendments to the charter had to be made before October 31 of this year.
One of the delegates, a priest of the LOC, spoke about the decision of the Council: “The Council took place. Accepted – implement the law and amend the legal charter. And turn to His Holiness Patriarch Kirill with an appeal for help in the canonical solution of the current situation. No other decisions were made. 161 voted, 160 in favor, 1 against, 0 abstained.”
