The head of the Department for external church relations of the Moscow Patriarchate, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution of 1821, said: “The Greeks gave us the Orthodox faith.”

“Our faith is based on the Greek language and Greek theology… The texts of the Divine Liturgy were written in Greek and translated into Slavic. Likewise, the psalms that we hear during Matins of Vespers, festive chants and troparia of Great Lent were written in Greek… This is only a small fraction of what we owe to the Greek people, since they gave us the sacred Orthodox faith,” he said.
