Archbishop George of Michalovce and Kosice: Officials in Ukraine abuse religion

On March 30, 2023, on the official Facebook page of the Diocese of Michalovce and Kosice of the Orthodox Church of the Czech Lands and Slovakia, a comment was published by the head of this diocese, Archbishop George, regarding the situation around the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra. The DECR UOC reports this on its Telegram page.

In the text, Archbishop George expressed his support for His Beatitude Metropolitan Onufry of Kiev and All Ukraine and the brethren of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, noting that he “well knows its spiritual significance”, because he repeatedly visited the Lavra as a priest and bishop.

Archbishop George expressed his surprise at the latest developments in Ukraine: “I remain amazed that during the war the officials of Ukraine are concentrating their forces on provoking internal strife, shamelessly abusing religion.”

The bishop concluded his commentary with an appeal: “Come to your senses, please, before it’s too late, let the monks live and pray in their Lavra! After all, they are people, not things to be moved; they are citizens of Ukraine, not enemies; their life is not your property!”.
