The Anglican Church will explore the possibility of using gender-neutral terms to refer to God, RIA Novosti reports.
The Rev. Dr. Michael Ipgrave, Bishop of Lichfield, said a project on gender language would be considered this spring.
In addition, according to him, the church has been researching this issue for several years. The priests asked permission to use gender-neutral terms instead of “He” when referring to God.
However, it is not yet clear what will replace the appeal “Our Father” in prayer.
The Guardian cites the opinion of the Rev. Dr. Jan Paul, who believes that possible changes would mean abandoning the church’s own doctrine. In his words, “God is called ‘Father’ and he cannot become ‘Mother’ without changing the meaning.” In addition, it cannot be replaced by a gender-neutral “Parent” without losing its meaning.
