Lyudmila Filippovich: Liquidation of the UOC is possible only in two cases

The liquidation of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church is possible if the council of the church decides to dissolve itself, or if the activities of individual parishes can be suspended in court. This was emphasized by the religious scholar, Doctor of Philosophy of the Institute of Philosophy of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Lyudmila Filippovich, Ukrinform reports.

“We have enough current legislative base to bring to justice people who discredit the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, outlawing it. It seems that the Ukrainian roots of this church seem to have been cut out. Therefore, it is necessary to remind all believers, especially the leadership of the UOC, that they are citizens of Ukraine and that they are just as responsible for what is happening in our country as everyone else. If they commit a crime, such as spreading a hostile ideology, it falls under the law and should be prosecuted,” Filippovich said.

According to the expert, the liquidation of the UOC is possible only in two cases: if the council of the church decides to dissolve itself, “which should not be expected from the UOC,” or the activities of individual parishes can be suspended in court, which requires solid evidence and perseverance on the part of the prosecution.

At the same time, Filippovich emphasized that there are clergy in the UOC who are aware of the need to contextualize religious life in accordance with military circumstances. In her opinion, the “healthy forces of the church” currently amount to about 500 priests.
