“Changing the status of the UOC is possible only at the Local Council of the Russian Orthodox Church,” – the Synod of the Russian Church

The Russian Orthodox Church supported the bishops, clergy and laity of the UOC, who strive to adhere to the order determined by the Diploma of His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Russia and the canonical norm of commemoration at divine services of the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia. This is noted in the Journal of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church No. 58 by the Decree of June 7, 2022.

The Synod decided “to note with regret the continuing pressure on the hierarchs, clergy, monastics and laity of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church by representatives of the Ukrainian state authorities and the extremist-minded part of Ukrainian society”, as well as “to express support to all hierarchs, clergy, monastics and laity of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, who, realizing the need to observe the canonical system, strive to adhere to the order determined by the Diploma of His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Russia of October 27, 1990 and the canonical norm of commemoration at divine services of the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia (see Dvukr. 15).

The Holy Synod recalls that “the decision to change the status of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church can only be taken within the framework of the canonical procedure, including the decision of the Local Council of the Russian Orthodox Church. Emphasize that unauthorized actions to change the status of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church may lead to the emergence of a new schism within it. The Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church also drew attention to this, pointing out in its statement of May 12, 2022 that any discussions concerning the life of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church should take place within the framework of the canonical field and should not lead to new divisions in the Church.”

The Russian Orthodox Church calls on all bishops, clergy, monastics and laity to pray for the preservation of church unity.
