The rector of the KDAiS told on what principles a dialogue between the UOC and the OCU is possible

The rector of the Kyiv Theological Schools, Bishop Sylvester (Stoychev) of Belogorodsk, spoke about what, in his opinion, this dialogue between the UOC and the OCU could be, and on what principles it should be built.

1. The need for dialogue
“A lot of mutual accusations and outright insults have been accumulated. Dialogue is the only way to overcome conflicts.”

2. Mutual respect is the main foundation of dialogue
“We can discuss theological and canonical issues. This is fine. But at the same time, we must see the opponent for who he is.”

3. Inadmissibility of mutual ultimatums
“If we have respect for each other, we should abandon the language of ultimatums and attempts to “absorb” the opponent. There can be no merger between the UOC and the OCU.”

4. Titles and official names
“Leave in the past the practice of deliberate distortion of official names. Moreover, the humiliating names of hierarchs and clergy should be recognized as unacceptable.

5. The problem of apostolic succession of episcopal consecrations
“Today we find ourselves in a situation where there are significant disagreements between the Local Churches in the interpretation of church canons. The problem of apostolic succession of episcopal consecrations is one of the main factors holding back other Local Churches from recognizing the OCU. And I personally believe that this problem should not be hushed up or forced out. On the contrary, as I said, problematic issues should be clearly formulated and frankly discussed, listening to the arguments.

6. Non-interference in the church dialogue of political forces
“Another important principle on which the dialogue should be built is non-interference in this process by state power and political forces.”
