Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State of the Vatican, recognizing the legitimate right of Ukraine to defend itself against Russian aggression, questioned the feasibility of supplying weapons.
“The international community wants to avoid escalation, and so far no country has intervened in the conflict, however, I see that many are sending weapons. This could cause an uncontrollable escalation,” he warned.
“The situation in the Donbass and in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions has always been in the focus of attention of the Vatican. The Holy See has always insisted on the implementation of the Minsk agreements, which seemed to be the main way to avoid what happened.”
He touched upon the possible visit of the Pope to Kyiv, stressing that “the Ukrainian side gives security guarantees and refers to the visits of other European leaders.”
