“People will come to us when the ROC disappears”: the OCU chaplain announced a new expansion strategy

The communities of the UOC “will return to the local Church later, when the ROC in Ukraine disappears,” said Sergei Dmitriev, chaplain of the 30th mechanized brigade, a former UOC cleric, in an interview with Babel.

“I myself have been in the ROC for many years, I left in 2014. And I believe that everyone who wanted to leave did it then. Some said that the Tomos was needed, without it was impossible to leave. Here we have Tomos, and some of us has also come to the OCU. But there are problems, because supporters of the Russian Orthodox Church in Ukraine, Novinsky et cetera invest a lot of money to ensure that these problems exist, so that their church will preserve all its parishes. The priests are afraid, they are intimidated,” the former priest of the UOC says.

At the same time, as it turned out, “the OCU does not need the race for the transition of parishes.”

“We don’t need this. We do not need walls and stones, let the ROC keep them. They will return to us later, when the ROC disappears in Ukraine. For a church that does not love its people is doomed to emigrate. We win the hearts of people with good deeds, humanity and openness. This is our strategy, our credo. Why do I need ten temples if they are empty?” the representative of the OCU said.
