Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk told the TASS news agency that “Pope Francis has repeatedly spoken about his desire to meet with Patriarch Kirill, including at my last and the two last meetings with him. For his part, Patriarch Kirill would also like to meet with Pope Francis because more than five years have passed since the previous meeting, which was the first, and many new questions have accumulated.”
The Metropolitan said that the meeting is planned for 2022, while the exact time and place are not yet known.
According to the hierarch, the Patriarch and the Pope “will not talk about some theological issues that separate Orthodox and Catholics, but will talk primarily about how Christians can survive in the modern world, where they face persecution, violence, risk for life”.
Let us recall that the first meeting of the Patriarch and the Pope of Rome took place in 2016 in Havana and caused confusion among many believers of the Russian Orthodox Church.
