The adoption of the new calendar raised pastoral questions for the Church – Patriarch of Jerusalem

The adoption of the new calendar brought the Orthodox Church face to face with pastoral issues, which also have social implications, and must be dealt with with a sense of responsibility. Patriarch Theophilos of Jerusalem wrote about this in his Christmas message.

“The Feast of Nativity, as a great feast of the Lord, has been celebrated since ancient times with appropriate liturgical splendor by our Patriarchate and the venerable Holy Sepulcher Brotherhood on December 25 (according to the old calendar), which corresponds to January 7 (according to the new calendar), and our Christian fullness follows this.

“Observing this order handed down by our fathers, i.e. tradition “(see 1 Tim. 6:20) Patriarchs and teachers before Us, and” looking for that which serves for peace and for mutual edification “(Rom. 14:19), we call the priests of our flock, so that on day 12 December (according to the old calendar), which corresponds to December 25 (according to the new calendar), they opened holy temples and sang the succession to the Holy Fathers of our Father Spyridon, the Bishop of Trimyphus the Wonderworker, which includes the Catavasias and other pre-holiday Christmas carols, and not the service of Christmas on December 25 ; after the Matins service, celebrate the Divine Liturgy.

As you know, the adoption of the new calendar has brought the Orthodox Church face to face with pastoral issues, which also have social consequences, and we are called to resolve them with a sense of responsibility. On this day, after the aforementioned succession of the feast of St. Spyridon, members of our Greek Orthodox flock can start social, not church activities, ”the message says.
