On September 19, 2021, the Divine Liturgy at the Compound of the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia in Sofia was led by Metropolitan John of Varna and Great Preslav in co-service with Bishop Gerasim of Melnish, the chief secretary of the Holy Synod of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, the rector of the Patriarchal Compound in Sofia Archimandrite Vassian (Zmeev), Center Chrismа writes.

At the end of the Divine Liturgy, Metropolitan John said that he was very glad to serve in the Church of St. Nicholas of Mirliki, in the Sofia Russian Church, beloved by Bulgarians. “Here nationality no longer matters,” Vladyka John continued, “but only the main thing is belonging to the Catholic Orthodox Church. We are brothers in Christ, regardless of place of birth and place of service. That is why my beloved brother, Bishop Gerasim of Melnish, and I served here today. <…> Orthodoxy will be able to survive all trials if we are internally united as Christians and as servants of the holy altar, ”he said.

Vladyka John is one of three Bulgarian metropolitans who made a statement on the church situation in Ukraine on October 12, 2018 and expressed the conviction that “an authoritative solution of the church dispute in Ukraine in this situation is possible only through pan-Orthodox discussion and the convocation of a Pan-Orthodox Council.”
