The hierarch of the Alexandrian Church who did not support the recognition of the OCU died

On September 5, 2021, the hierarch of the Patriarchate of Alexandria, Metropolitan Jonah (Luanga) of Uganda, died. He did not support the recognition of the OCU in 2019. The cleric of the Russian Orthodox Church, Father Georgy Maksimov, informed this on his Telegram-channel.

“Today, Metropolitan Jonah (Luanga) of Uganda, the oldest black bishop of the Alexandrian Orthodox Church, died in a hospital in Athens. A year and a half ago I met with him in Uganda, we talked very warmly. In an informal conversation, the hierarch said that he opposed the recognition of the OCU by the Alexandrian Patriarchate, but Patriarch Theodore eventually did everything on his own.

To the credit of Metropolitan Jonah, he did not subject to any persecution those of his clergy who signed an open letter in support of the Russian Orthodox Church. The Greek bishops subjected almost all of their clergy to pressure for this. And one more young black bishop,” said Father George.
