The Primate of the UOC told why heresies and schisms appear

Human pride, combined with knowledge, contributes to the emergence of heresies and schisms in the Church. Metropolitan Onuphry said this in his sermon on the feast day of the three hundred and eighteen holy fathers of the First Ecumenical Council, Phraza writes.

“When the persecution from the outside world ceased, another battle began. The devil does not leave a person alone and constantly fights against him, therefore heresies and schisms began to appear within the Church. All this was generated by human pride,” the Primate emphasized.

Metropolitan Onuphry recalled the history of the First Ecumenical Council and the saints of that time in their struggle against the Arian heresy.

According to the Primate, if “knowledge is combined with human pride, then schisms, heresies, division and all evil that harm a person already in this earthly life and in the next century are born from it”.

“From knowledge that is combined with humility, spiritual wisdom is born. It reveals to man the Truth, which is God, our Creator and Creator. Humility helps people to unite in Truth. The First Ecumenical Council showed the power of the conciliar mind of the Church and the power that humility has,” the Primate said.
