Filaret is unlikely to succeed in restoring the legal status of the Kyiv Patriarchate. Neither the Phanar nor the US State Department could allow anything to jeopardize the legal foundation of the newly created OCU. Therefore, initially, Filaret’s idea was doomed to failure.
However, it is obvious that Denisenko is unlikely to admit his surrender. He always has the option of registering a new structure and a new religious association. The authorities have no grounds for refusing to register such an association. Although, of course, this does not mean that they cannot refuse this. As we can see from recent events, it is very problematic to appeal to the law in relations with the current Ukrainian authorities.
Moreover, this is not the biggest problem for the aged leader of the remnants of the UOC-KP. At the very beginning of its existence, the “Kyiv Patriarchate” was created with the powerful support of the authorities. Now Filaret has no such support. Except for the help of individual politicians and public figures. It is difficult to say whether this will be enough to continue the existence of this structure in the future.
At the same time, the “OCU”, obviously, will not stop trying to completely destroy what is left of the “Kyiv Patriarchate”. For them, Filaret and the supporters who remained with him are a constant irritant, which badly tarnished the reputation of the Phanar and made Patriarch Bartholomew look stupidly. Therefore, they will try to blot out this “shameful spot” from their history.
Nevertheless, in any case, the struggle between the father of the entire backbone of the “OCU” hierarchy and the “OCU” itself will continue. Which of them will win is still unknown. However, it doesn’t matter. Filaret’s exit from the OCU and the truth about how the notorious “unification council” was held, turned into a caricature the “unctuous picture” that Patriarch Bartholomew tried to present to other Local Orthodox Churches. And there is no way to fix it.
