The “heresy of papism” of the Patriarchate of Constantinople should receive a conciliar assessment from the Russian and other Local Churches, but in the absence of condemnation of the “new ecclesiology” of Constantinople, many of its supporters in the Orthodox world will remain in touch and unity with it, says an expert on the history of the Church and the history of Greece Athanasius Zoitakis.
“At the moment, there is no condemnation of the doctrine of the absolute primacy of the Patriarchate of Constantinople by the Local Churches. Moreover, even those who disagree with the actions of the Phanar in Ukraine continue to be in Eucharistic communion with him, the only exception is the Russian Church. the new ecclesiology of Constantinople would have been condemned until it passed.”
Constantinople has not yet formalized its new doctrine of the Church. “When they were accused of papism, they began to deny that they didn’t claim this at all and were only exercising the powers that they supposedly had historically belonged to. That is, they are still denying it, although de facto they are not claiming the role of“ sisters “but” the mothers of the Local Churches,” the expert noted.
According to Zoitakis, the “new ecclesiology” of Constantinople should sooner or later receive its assessment from the side of universal Orthodoxy – all the Local Orthodox Churches.
