Montenegrin President threatened to expel Orthodox priests

Another scandal broke out between the President of Montenegro Milo Djukanovic and the Serbian Orthodox Church, which has long become his favorite target, especially after the defeat of the Democratic Party of Socialists in the elections – for the first time in thirty years. He repeatedly blamed the Serbian Orthodox Church for his defeat, FAN writes.

The head of Montenegro sharply criticized the statements of Archpriest Velibor Dzhomich from the Montenegrin-Primorsky Metropolis, who stated that the number of priests in the country exceeds the number of military personnel of the Montenegrin army.

“There are 650 church councils alone in Montenegro. Let there be at least five people at each council, this is already more than three thousand people. This is more than the entire Montenegrin army counts,” the priest said.

Djukanovic threatened to eliminate this discrepancy, hinting at the possible expulsion of “illegal priests” from Montenegro.

“If someone thinks that they have the right to tell us that there are more priests of the Serbian Orthodox Church than soldiers in Montenegro, then this only reminds us that we must resolve this discrepancy. Most likely, we will do it naturally. So that there is no room left in Montenegro for those who are here illegally,” the president said.

Milo Djukanovic also addressed the government:

“We must clearly warn those who use the power to destroy the Montenegrin identity that they will not succeed – everything they do is recorded in detail. They will have to answer for their actions.”
